The NHS have already recognised the role of the pharmacist in improving patient care and providing value for money. However, the practicalities of implementing services is often difficult. For example if the local PCT introduces a scheme on recording interventions, workload in the pharmacy often means such initiatives get pushed to the bottom of the pile. Equally a patient review mechanism requires reams of duplicate paper to be stored at the pharmacy and completed. Often a huge amount of time is spent trying to extract useful information from pharmacy systems before sensible conclusions can be drawn. Lastly, if the local PCT wishes to use the skills of the pharmacist to provide some input to the local GPs formulary, the PCT must make a payment not only for the pharmacist providing the service, but also for the locum covering the pharmacy for the hour (if one is available for an hour).

CAPA addresses all these issues. The system provides for intervention recording at a press of a button, for reviews to be carried out with pre-drawn and nationally approved templates. Data can be extracted in any manner required and in any format. Pre-printed letters can be generated to refer patients to their Doctor. And of course, the remote supervision element allows the pharmacist to visit other healthcare professionals or extend opening hours at a cost which is competitive for the NHS.

CAPA has been designed to make significant savings to the NHS.
